Side Effects Of Sucralose

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener better known as Splenda. Many people think that sucralose is better for you than Aspartame, simply because it is “made from sugar”. The truth is, there are 18 chemicals involved in the making of sucralose. One of the most dangerous chemicals in sucralose is chlorine. Chlorine is attached to the sugar molecules to make the sugar sweeter. The other 17 chemicals are used to try and prevent the chlorine from being absorbed into your body during digestion, because if it is, you could experience a vast array of health problems, including death.

Since Splenda is a relatively new sugar alternative, there have not been any long term studies done to test the side effects of Splenda, but there have been self reported side effects already. It has also been reported that Splenda may trigger migraine headaches. Some of the side effects that have been reported are: Skin rashes and irritation, panic attacks and agitation, numbness and dizziness, muscle aches, swelling, headaches, intestinal cramping, bladder issues, and stomach pain. As a food product, sucralose is not tested as thoroughly as pharmaceuticals. On top of that the food industry are the people funding the testing, and needless to say, that should be considered conflict of interest.

This really the same thing that happened with aspartame, the main ingredient in Nutrasweet and Equal. Most of the studies done on aspartame found very harmful side effects in rodents. Instead of banning aspartame, the FDA approved it for public use. After about 20 years of the public using aspartame, all of those serious side effects that were found in rodents, were also found in humans. Everyone will not experience side effects from sucralose or aspartame though, it really depends on how much you use and what kind of genetic predispositions you have.

It really is a shame that there have not been tests done to establish the safety of a product that is being used by a large portion of the public, including children. In the past, artificial sweeteners have been known to be unhealthy and to contain many harmful chemicals. It appears that sucralose is just the latest trend following in the footsteps of aspartame, and it could turn out to be looked at in the same way over the next decade. So far the only sugar alternative that is considered to be safe is the plant Stevia. Whether or not sucralose is safe for YOU, I don’t know, but I myself choose not to take that risk with my health. What if that chlorine that the other 17 chemicals are attempting to keep you from absorbing, get absorbed into your body? Do you want to find out the answer to that through a health problem?
